The true meaning of sustainability: re-use

We all know the three Rs rule: reduce, recycle and reuse, but have organisations really implemented these ways of being sustainable in their transition to the circular economy? The simple answer is no. Unfortunately, companies continue to encourage the creation of raw materials instead of infinitely reusing or recycling all those that already exist. At Moheda Group we are very aware of the need to lead this change from values such as innovation, sustainability and social and technological progress, so we want to be prescribers of the real way to be sustainable: reusing materials.

New sustainable materials

Although there is still a long way to go for the scenario to change, significant developments are already taking place that demonstrate that the understanding of sustainable production is being realised. The latest example of this is the project carried out by a group of engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop self-cooling fabrics made from polyethylene, the material used in plastic bags, which they hope will become "the fabric of the future", more sustainable than cotton and other materials.

Their research claims that polyethylene is "thin and light" and so a garment made from this material "could keep you cooler than most textiles because it lets heat through rather than trapping it".

According to researcher and scientist at MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering Svetlana Boriskina, plastic bags, which often end up in the ocean causing serious problems, could be collected and recycled into a "trainer or a hoodie".

Re-use is the way forward

The circular and collaborative economy are no longer the future, they are the present. Economic reinvention requires a profound change in industrial processes and business strategies and, of course, in the reuse of materials.

Thanks to technology, new ways of reusing existing resources have recently emerged in different parts of the world. These methods are also being implemented in industrial companies like ours, so in our commitment to lead this change, we apply the most sustainable practices and reinforce the messages to the population with a call to strengthen efforts in the use and consumption consistent with our environment. Prioritise quality and reusable products, especially. We are aware that it is the small acts that enable us to greatly reduce our impact on the planet and we want the rest of the economic actors to understand this and promote pragmatic sustainability.

Moheda Group firmly believes that this is possible thanks to the power of research and technological progress to achieve the development of sustainable products of the highest quality. Thanks to the work of our team, we are developing increasingly efficient and sustainable production processes based on the reuse of plastics.

In short, we want to encourage real change in the citizen, who is ultimately responsible and the main actor with the capacity to make change happen. Informing and understanding the importance of concepts such as the generalised reduction of consumption, reuse, extending the useful life of products, reparability, recyclability, the consumption of services instead of products and the incorporation of materials from waste back into products.
