Women in sustainable industry
March has become women's month in its own right. Dates such as 8M should serve to vindicate the work of women in areas as fundamental to the development of society as industry. At Moheda Group we are aware of the need to promote the work and ideas of women in traditionally male sectors such as industrial production. The value of the ideas of Moheda Group's professional women is transferred to our processes and products, emphasising sustainability, environmental protection, quality and innovation.
The women who led the change
The incorporation of women into the world of work has been well documented since the beginning of industrialisation, although women's work has always existed. Despite the difficulties, there are women who have transcended throughout history by paving the way for other women and by leading the change of paradigms in society.
Today, we are in the midst of a fourth industrial revolution, in which technology has become a major player. Women have become key players in this fourth revolution, as they have risen to leadership positions in large technology companies and other important sectors.
Women in political and economic power are well aware of the need to combine technological progress with sustainability and the environment. They are also major drivers of companies' corporate social responsibility policies. Women are the protagonists of the change towards a sustainable industry.
Women environmental defenders
Women's month is a good time to highlight the enormous work of women environmentalists who have dedicated their lives to protecting the environment. Some names are well known, such as the primatologist Jane Goodall. But there are even women who have been murdered for defending environmental causes, such as the Honduran indigenous activist Berta Cáceres, who tried to stop a hydroelectric project that devastated her community.
One of the pioneering women in the fight against the use of pesticides was Rachel Carson. She observed that birds were dying because of the pesticides used on crops. As a result of her research, she published the book Silent Spring, but not without obstacles, as large corporations wanted to prevent it. Thanks to his work, the US Environmental Protection Agency was set up and environmentally harmful pesticides were banned.
The story of the so-called "tree woman" is an exciting one. Wangari Maathai is the forerunner of the Green Belt Movement, which combines environmental protection with the empowerment of African women. Her work led to her winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.
Greta Thunberg, a Swedish teenager, has managed to put her concern about climate change on the public agenda and is the inspiration behind the student movement Fridays for Future, through which young people demand active policies to defend the environment.
At Moheda Group we are inspired by the environmental work of all these women who, through their research, activism and example, have wanted to bequeath a better future to the generations to come. May this Women's Month serve as a spur for change. We firmly believe that sustainable development is the only way forward for companies. Every day is a challenge for Moheda Group to achieve the best business results and the best quality without compromising the world we leave to our children.
